Typhoid Information
Typhoid is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It is commonly spread through contaminated food
or water, especially in areas with poor sanitation. Symptoms of typhoid can include fever, body aches, stomach pain,
headache, and loss of appetite. If untreated, typhoid can lead to other health complications and may lead to death.
Vaccination is a safe and effective way to help protect yourself from typhoid.
The typhoid vaccination is recommended for travellers to regions where typhoid is common, as well as for certain
other high-risk groups.
There are two types of typhoid vaccines: an injectable vaccine and an oral vaccine. It is recommended that you
consult with your pharmacist immuniser to determine the most suitable option based on your travel plans or specific
health needs.
Who is recommended to receive a Typhoid vaccination?
- People aged 2 years and older who are travelling to typhoid-endemic regions, such as parts of Asia, Africa, and
Latin America
- Military personnel
- Laboratory personnel working with Salmonella Typhi
Who is eligible for a free Typhoid vaccination?
The Australian Government’s National Immunisation Program (NIP) does not currently provide Typhoid vaccines for free
to anyone. However, the vaccine can be administered privately with our participating pharmacies.
